Los Angeles Rams extend Jared Goff

The Rams have locked up their franchise quarterback to a eye opening extension. Goff has transformed into one of the bright young signal callers in the game, and the Rams didn’t want to waste anytime rewarding him. This article will be a breakdown of the deal, and the future impact of this move going forward. Feel free to leave your thoughts and comments below!

The Deal:
Jared Goff, Quarterback: 4 years 134 million and 110 million guaranteed

Reaction, Analysis, & Grade:
The Rams have transformed into a super bowl contender under the guidance of head coach Sean McVay. His best work so far is transforming this offense, and specifically Jared Goff into one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Goff has gone from a lackluster rookie to leading his team to the Super Bowl last season. Jared is coming off a career year in which he set a personal high in passing yards, touchdowns, completions, and completion percentage. He rated 10th in QBR or overall quarterback rating which was higher than Russell Wilson and Carson Wentz who were both recently extended. Goff is a very accurate quarterback, and has the arm strength to make throws downfield. He has a good pocket awareness, and gets rid of the ball in a appropriate manner. He can make throws into tight windows, and has the ability to make touch passes if necessary. When his receiving core was healthy early in the year, Goff was one of the leading candidates for MVP. He tailed off at the end of 2018, and part of this was because of the injury to his safety blanket receiver Cooper Kupp. He doesn’t have the strongest arm in the world, but has the ability to lead his team and has a knack for making pressure throws. There is going to be some brush back on this move especially concerning that gigantic guaranteed amount. However, unlike Wentz, Goff has been able to stay healthy, and is yet to miss a game as a regular starter. He is very young at age 24, and obviously the Rams are predicting him to only get better with McVay at the helm. The growth he has shown from his rookie season has been remarkable. He was labeled as a possible bust after his first season, but flipped the switch once McVay took over as the head coach. Goff isn’t without weaknesses however, at times he can make bad decisions when there is pressure in his face. He will turn the ball over, and sometimes takes to many chances when forcing a ball to the receiver. He tends to stare down his targets for too long, and struggled with his decision making during the playoffs. He doesn’t have the strongest arm in the world, and one could argue his numbers are inflated because of McVay’s quarterback friendly system. He doesn’t have to carry as much of the burden because running back Todd Gurley draws the majority of the defenses attention. Goff will have to prove he is worth this contract with Gurley expected to see a dip in his touches. Gurley is dealing with an arthritic knee, and doctors aren’t sure if it will ever be one hundred percent. Jared will be forced to play a bigger role this season, and have even higher expectations after a Super Bowl appearance last year. Only time will tell if this deal will pay off in the future for the Rams. Will Goff continue to grow and ascend to one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL? Or will he digress after being forced to carry a heavier load, and deal with high expectations that come with this huge contract. I think this is a smart move by the Rams to lock up their quarterback early before the contracts get out of hand. Goff is still young, and has a ton of room for growth with a ton of weapons at his side with this offense. As long as Sean McVay is calling the shots I believe Goff will continue to develop into a blue chip prospect for the Rams.
