The Warriors leader on and off the court will remain with Golden State after a big extension. The Warriors locked up their brash superstar to a lucrative 4 year 100 million dollar extension. When you look at the stat line of Draymond Green, this may seem like a major overpay, but his affect on this roster is undeniable and extends beyond stats. This article is a breakdown of what this deal means for Draymond, and the franchise going forward
The Deal: 4 years 100 million dollar extension
Reaction, Analysis, and Grade:
The Warriors had to know at some point Kevin Durant was going to move on, and try to win as the headline superstar of his own team. Golden State has dominated the NBA for the last several years, and might have added another title if injuries had not got in the way during the postseason. After losing Kevin Durant and trading Andre Igoudala it seems the Warriors had a plan in place. The first part of their plan was to extend shooting guard Klay Thompson to a max deal. They then traded for D’Angelo Russell, and awarded the budding superstar with a lucrative deal of his own. They had one piece of business left to finish which was paying their teams most passionate force in power forward Draymond Green. So what does Green bring to the table and why was this deal initiated? Draymond does all of the little things that your current superstars avoid. Green plays high level defense, and has the versatility to guard big men as well as occasionally cover smaller men. He plays with a passion, heart, and a unwavering desire to win every game. He also serves as a leader of this team, and has the ability to check superstars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson when needed. All of the great superstars have had teammates that were unafraid to speak up against them if needed. Michael Jordan had Dennis Rodman, Lebron James had Chris Bosh, Isiah Thomas had Bill Laimbeer, and so on. Draymond is the voice of the entire team, and keeps the club focused on the major goal which is winning. Green also has the ability to handle the ball, and is a underrated passer when distributing the rock. Green is not a prolific scorer, but has the know how to make plays when he needs to. He is also a solid rebounder, and gets into the opponents head by plaing mind games. The Warriors in a sense had to reward Draymond Green because this team wouldn’t have been as successful without him. Green also knows how the Warriors operate, and bringing in a new face to replace him would upset the teams chemistry. The Warriors are embarking on a new journey where they find themselves as one of the forgotten contenders with all of the major moves this offseason. I believe they have done a fine job of recovering after losing one of the greatest players of all time. They have added a few new faces, but have rewarded their loyal superstars who have dedicated themselves to this franchise. Draymond Green will continue to succeed with the Warriors, and don’t be surprised if they are in the mix as a title contender next season.
