Martial Arts, Why You Should Train

One of the longest practiced sporting activities over the course of time has been martial arts. There are various martial arts, such as Karate, Aikido, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and so on. Many people across the world currently train, however there is still a large percentage they don’t. At first, I didn’t want to train martial arts, because I thought it was a joke. I had watched several films with actors swinging sticks rapidly and making sound effect noises. Finally, my cousin convinced me to start training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I expected to show up for one class just to appease him, but quickly found out my initial expectations were wrong. After I, at three hundred pounds, was submitted by a fourteen year old who was a hundred pounds in a matter of seconds became hooked. It was like a light bulb flashed on in my brain, and motivated me to keep going on this journey. Here are a few of the many reasons for getting involved in martial arts.

1. Learning self control and discipline

2. Staying active, leads to weight loss

3. Learning to defend yourself

4. Building friendships and/or bonds with fellow students

5. Stress Reducer

6. Build Self confidence

These are just a few of the many attributes that come with joining a martial arts gym. I can personally attest to the benefits of training. I have long battled with being overweight, and have been able to manage my weight through training. I currently hold a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Ion Jiu-Jitsu in Sulphur Springs, Texas. As a kid, I also dealt with several issues such as depression, lack of confidence, and shyness. I have been able to not only deal, but conquer these issues by training on a weekly/daily basis. I can honestly say that martial arts turned my life around for the better. I believe that it can do the same for you too. Just in case you’re searching for an answer or feel the need to be a part of something. Look up your local martial arts gym and give it a try. I can promise you, if you’re anything like me it will be a blessing in disguise.
